Dansko Shoes
Hal Manogue- Author Essayist and Poet
No one is really sure when and where wooden shoes were first worn. The Dutch have been wearing wooden shoes, better known as clogs, for at least seven hundred years. The Swedes and the Danes have been wearing clogs as everyday shoes for centuries. The early models didn't have a backpart, so only the front of the foot was covered. The Dutch were the first group to manufacture open back clogs for mass production. The Dutch started a clog guild in 1570.
Four hundred years later, the clog took the United States by storm. During the mid-1970s,women across the country had to have a pair of open back clogs to complement their tight fitting jeans. The closed back clog was introduced to the US around the same time, but it didn't have the appeal of the open back until the early 1990s. That's when Mandy Cabot and Peter Kjellerup, a couple in the horse business, found them in a tiny retail store in Copenhagen. They fell in love with the comfort and versatility of the closed back clog,
The couple made several return trips to Denmark and filled suitcases with these new footwear superstars. They gave them to friends. The demand to own a pair of Danish shoe-clogs grew quickly, so Mary and Peter decided to form Dansko Shoes. The name Dansko comes from two words, Dan is short for Danish, and Sko means shoe. It didn't take long for the company to change the footwear scene in the US. Dansko Shoes went from one employee in 1991 to over 130 employees in 2010.
Dansko shoes are all about comfort and versatility, as well as foot, leg and back health. The company's extensive shoe line consists of boots, sandals, and flats, as well as timeless closed back, and opened back clogs.
